Λιβάνι είναι ένα από τα στοιχεία τα οποία απαρτίζεται το θυμίαμα. Επίσης λιβάνι ήταν και ένα από τα τρία δώρα των Μάγων στο νεογέννητο Χριστό. Αυτό αποδεικνύει τη σπανιότητα και την πολυτιμότατα του. Το δένδρο από το οποίο προέρχεται ονομάζεται Μποζουέλια (Boswellia) του οποίου κάποιες από τις ποικιλίες είναι Παπυρηφέρα , Καρτέρι κλπ. και βρίσκεται στις Αφρικανικές χώρες Αιθιοπία, Ομάν, Σομαλία, Σουδάν και Υεμένη. Είναι δέντρο πολύ ψηλό και πυκνόφυλλο, που δύο συγκεκριμένους μήνες τον χρόνο χαράζεται με ειδικά μαχαίρια ο κορμός του. Το λιβάνι τρέχει από τις χαρακιές και στη συνέχεια το μαζεύουν.
